Ginny's Christmas Stocking

Knit a lovely Christmas stocking using a classic pattern, brought to you from a family tradition! (Read below for the full story) Katie will take you step-by-step through the process, and you'll learn some great skills along the way!

Prerequisites: You must already know and be comfortable with knits and purls and knitting in the round. 

If you have knit a sock before, that is great; and if you have not, that is OK, too.

Techniques covered: I-cord, cable cast-on, duplicate stitch, reading charts, and knitting sock parts (cuff, leg, heel flap, heel turn, gusset, foot, and toe).

Schedule: We’ll meet over four 90-minute classes, over 5 weeks. Classes are on Tuesday evenings, November 3rd, 10th, 17th and December 1st, from 6pm-7:30pm. There is no class the Tuesday before Thanksgiving.

Materials:
- Pattern is provided at first class.
- Worsted weight yarn in three colors. Red (~60 grams), Green (~35 grams), White (~25 grams)
Please feel free to go off-script color-wise!
- You will also need a couple yards of an “eye color”, also in worsted.

- US 5 - 3.75mm (or size to obtain gauge) needles for knitting in the round in your preferred method: 16" circular needle, double-pointed needles, or 40” circular needle for magic loop 
- Tapestry needle
- Stitch markers
- Jingle bells will be provided!

Class fee does not include supplies. Registered students receive a 10% discount on supplies for the class. 

Homework before first class: knit gauge swatch(es) to determine needle size. Swatching in the round is preferable but not critical. Being exact with gauge is not necessary!

Stitch Gauge:  22st over 4” (Row gauge is not critical.)

Ginny's Stocking Story

My grandmother, Ginny, started a Christmas stocking tradition in the 1940s. She knit matching, personalized stockings for every member of her family. When her children had kids (me included), we each got hand knit stockings, too. After Ginny’s passing in the late 70s, my mother and father picked up the tradition, re-knitting socks lost to theft and then knitting socks for their grandchildren and grandnieces/nephews. Now it is my turn, and I’d like it to be yours as well! I don’t know if Ginny got the pattern out of a magazine, if it was shared with her, or if she wrote it herself. All I know is, I got a very faded copy of the Santa chart with BRIEF pencil notes along the margin. You will receive an updated pattern with not-quite-so-brief instructions and charted Santa and lettering. Don’t worry, though, as we will go through each step together! – Katie
